About VetPlus Samylin Small Breed Tablets

The liver filters toxins, stores energy and breaks down many medicines. When it is under strain, a pet can lose appetite, energy and condition, and blood tests may show raised liver values.

VetPlus Samylin Small Breed Tablets is a liver supplement from VetPlus for cats and small dogs under 10kg. It combines S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe) with silybin, the active part of milk thistle, plus vitamins E and C. SAMe helps the liver make glutathione, its own antioxidant. Silybin helps protect liver cells.

VetPlus lists Samylin for use alongside vet care in liver disease and around abdominal surgery. It is also listed during long courses of liver-straining medicines, and in pancreatitis, diabetes and Cushing's disease. Your vet should confirm it suits your pet and how long to give it.

Available Sizes and Forms

These are the Small Breed tablets, for cats and dogs under 10kg. A box of 30 lasts 30 days for a pet under 5kg and 15 days for a pet of 5 to 10kg. If your pet will not take tablets, the Small Breed sachets have the same strength in granules you mix into food.

Ingredients

Active ingredients, as VetPlus lists them. Amounts shown are per tablet or sachet. The full analysis is printed on the pack.

Ingredient What it does
S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), 75mg Supports the liver's own production of glutathione, an antioxidant that protects liver cells.
Silybin, 10mg The active part of milk thistle. An antioxidant that helps protect liver cells.
Vitamin E An antioxidant vitamin that helps protect cell membranes.
Vitamin C An antioxidant vitamin that works alongside vitamin E.
Yeast and dextrose The carrier that holds the active ingredients.

Features and Benefits

  • Two liver supports in one. SAMe and silybin work in different ways, so you do not need to buy a separate milk thistle product. VetPlus says adding more milk thistle is not needed.
  • Coated tablet. The coating protects SAMe from stomach acid, so it can be absorbed further along the gut. This is why the tablet must be swallowed whole.
  • Antioxidant vitamins added. Vitamins E and C give extra protection against the oxidative stress that damages liver cells.
  • Dosed by body weight. Small, Medium and Large Breed strengths make it simple to give the right daily amount for your pet's size.
  • Not tied to mealtimes. VetPlus says Samylin does not have to be given on an empty stomach and can be given between meals.

How Much to Give

VetPlus doses Samylin by body weight. Give the daily amount below, or the amount your vet advises.

Body weight Daily amount
Under 5kg 1 Small Breed tablet or sachet
5 to 10kg 2 Small Breed tablets or sachets
11 to 20kg 1 Medium Breed
21 to 30kg 2 Medium Breed
31 to 40kg 2 Large Breed
41 to 50kg 3 Large Breed

For dogs over 50kg, or if your vet has asked for a different amount, follow your vet's directions.

How It Works

  • SAMe. S-adenosylmethionine is a substance the body makes naturally. The liver uses it to make glutathione, one of the main antioxidants that protect liver cells while they clear toxins.
  • Silybin. Silybin is the most active part of milk thistle extract. It is an antioxidant that helps protect liver cells from damage.
  • Vitamins E and C. These two vitamins add extra antioxidant support. VetPlus says Samylin is useful whenever oxidative stress plays a part in a liver problem.

How to Use

  • Give it whole. Do not split, crush or chew the tablet. Breaking it damages the coating and VetPlus says this inactivates the SAMe.
  • Giving a tablet. Place it at the back of the tongue, close the mouth gently and stroke the throat until your pet swallows. You can hide it in a small piece of food, but do not leave it soaking in wet food.
  • Every day. Give the daily amount for your pet's weight at about the same time each day. You can split a two tablet dose between morning and evening.
  • Storage. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Keep out of reach of children.

Safety and Precautions

  • See your vet first. Liver problems need a diagnosis. Samylin supports the liver alongside your vet's treatment. It does not replace it.
  • Other liver products. VetPlus advises speaking to your vet before combining Samylin with artichoke products, which stimulate bile flow.
  • Other medicines. Tell your vet about every medicine and supplement your pet takes, so they can check the full plan.
  • Warning signs. Yellow gums or eyes, vomiting, a swollen belly or refusing food need a vet visit the same day.
  • Cats. Cats with liver disease often stop eating. A cat that has not eaten for a day or more needs a vet, not just a supplement.
