About Pomisol Ear Drops

Pomisol Ear Drops from Intas are medicated ear drops for dogs and cats. Each bottle holds 15ml of a four-ingredient formula: an antibiotic, an antifungal, a steroid and a local anaesthetic.

Ear infections in pets are often mixed. Bacteria and yeast grow together in a warm, waxy ear canal, and the ear becomes red, itchy and sore. Pomisol is made for this situation. Ofloxacin works against bacteria, clotrimazole works against yeast (Malassezia), betamethasone calms the swelling and itch, and lignocaine numbs the sore canal so your pet is more comfortable while the infection clears.

Signs of an ear infection include head shaking, scratching at the ear, a bad smell, brown or yellow discharge, redness inside the ear flap and pain when the ear is touched. Your vet will look inside the ear, check that the eardrum is intact, and often take a swab to see which germs are present. This helps decide whether Pomisol is the right choice.

Because it contains an antibiotic and a steroid, Pomisol is a prescription medicine. Use it only for the pet it was prescribed for and for as long as your vet advises.

Clotrimazole 1% Antifungal

Lignocaine hydrochloride 2% Local anaesthetic, eases pain

Features and Benefits

  • Four actions in one bottle. Antibacterial, antifungal, anti-inflammatory and pain-easing ingredients together, which suits mixed ear infections.
  • Ofloxacin antibiotic. A fluoroquinolone antibiotic that works against many bacteria found in infected ears.
  • Clotrimazole antifungal. Targets yeast such as Malassezia, a common cause of greasy, smelly ears.
  • Betamethasone and lignocaine. Ease swelling, itch and pain, so your pet scratches and shakes less.
  • Dropper bottle. The 15ml bottle puts the drops straight into the ear canal.

How It Works

  • Ofloxacin. It blocks an enzyme bacteria need to copy their DNA.
  • Clotrimazole. It damages the outer wall of fungal cells.
  • Betamethasone. It calms inflammation where it is applied.

How to Use

  • Check with your vet first. Your vet should check the eardrum before you start. Drops with an antibiotic like this should not go into an ear with a torn eardrum.
  • Clean if advised. If your vet advises, clean the ear with a vet ear cleanser and let it dry before the drops.
  • Putting in drops. Hold the ear flap up and put the drops into the ear canal. A retailer listing gives 8 to 10 drops per affected ear, but follow the number and frequency your vet sets.
  • Massage. Massage the base of the ear for 20 to 30 seconds so the drops spread down the canal. Then let your pet shake its head.
  • Finish the course. Keep going for the full time your vet prescribes, even when the ear looks better.
  • Storage. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight, and keep the cap tightly closed. Keep out of reach of children.

Safety and Precautions

  • Do not use if the eardrum may be damaged. Your vet can check this with an otoscope.
  • Stop and contact your vet if the ear becomes more red or painful, or if your pet tilts its head, loses balance or seems to hear less.
  • Do not put the dropper tip into the ear or let it touch anything, so the bottle stays clean.
  • Steroids in ear drops are meant for short courses. Do not use leftover drops for a new problem without your vet's advice.
  • Tell your vet if your pet is pregnant or nursing, or takes any other medicines.

What are Pomisol ear drops used for?

Pomisol is used for ear infections in dogs and cats, especially mixed infections with bacteria and yeast. It also eases the itch, swelling and pain that come with an infected ear.

How many drops of Pomisol should I use?

A retailer listing gives 8 to 10 drops in each affected ear, or as your vet directs. Your vet will set the number of drops, how often to use them and for how long.

Pomisol is sold for dogs and cats. Ask your vet to confirm it suits your cat, as cats can be more sensitive to some ear medicines.

How long until I see improvement?
